THE STORY

THIS PROJECT BEGAN WITH A PAUSE.

WHEN WE FIRST MET THE CLIENTS, THEY HAD A CLEAR VISION FOR THEIR VICTORIAN HOME IN SYDNEY’S EAST. BUT FOLLOWING A REJECTED DEVELOPMENT APPLICATION, THE RENOVATION WAS UNEXPECTEDLY PLACED ON HOLD. FOR A TIME, THE FUTURE OF THE HOME FELT UNCERTAIN, AND THE POSSIBILITY OF MOVING ON WAS CONSIDERED.

TWO YEAR LATER, THEY RETURNED - READY TO BEGIN AGAIN.

WITH A RENEWED BRIEF AND A FRESH ARCHITECTURAL APPROACH, THE PROJECT BECAME AN OPPORTUNITY TO RETHINK NOT JUST THE LAYOUT, BUT THE WAY THE HOME COULD TRULY SUPPORT MODERN FAMILY LIFE. IT WAS IMPORTANT TO RETAIN THE WARMTH AND CHARACTER OF THE ORIGINAL VICTORIAN DETAILING, WHILE INTRODUCING A MORE REFINED AND CONTEMPORARY LAYER.

THE EXISTING FOOTPRINT HELD A NUMBER OF INEFFICIENCIES - UNDERUTILISED SPACES, DISCONNECTED ZONES AND A LACK OF CONSIDERED STORAGE. THROUGH CAREFUL PLANNING, THESE AREAS WERE REIMAGINED TO CREATE A HOME THAT FEELS INTUITIVE AND CALM, WHERE MOVEMENT FLOWS NATURALLY AND EACH SPACE SERVES A CLEAR PURPOSE.

A THE CENTRE OF THE HOME, THE KITCHEN WAS TRANSFORMED INTO A PLACE FOR LIVING. GENEROUS IN SCALE YET HIGHLY RESOLVED IN DETAIL, IT BALANCES FUNCTIONALITY WITH RESTRAINT - SUPPORTING DAILY ROUTINES WHILE MAINTAINING A SENSE OF VISUAL CLARITY WITHIN A HOME FILLED WITH ART AND FAMILY LIFE.

THIS WAS NOT SIMPLY A RENOVATION OF FORM, BUT A CONSIDERED RESPONSE TO HOW THE HOME IS LIVED IN - TODAY AND OVER TIME.

AS THE FAMILY GREW, THE HOME EVOLVED WITH IT

A NEW UPPER-LEVEL ADDITION WAS INTRODUCED TO CREATE DEDICATED SPACES FOR THE CLIENTS’ DAUGHTERS, FORMING A PRIVATE AND CONSIDERED EXTENSION TO THE FAMILY HOME.

DESIGNED WITH LONGEVITY IN MIND, THESE ROOMS EMBRACE A SOFTER, MORE CONTEMPORARY PALETTE - ENSURING THEY WILL ADAPT OVER TIME.

WHAT HAS EMERGED IS A HOME THAT FEELS BOTH GROUNDED AND RENEWED.

A PLACE SHAPED BY ITS PAST, BUT DESIGNED FOR THE WAY THIS FAMILY LIVES NOW.
